TRPD issues release on Tuesday’s standoff

The Three Rivers Police Department released a statement just before 10 p.m. Tuesday regarding the standoff that took place Tuesday afternoon at a residence in the 100 block of Fifth Avenue.

According to the TRPD, officers were dispatched to a shots fired complaint at the aforementioned residence, where a victim reported a subject had fired off shots at him and his vehicle. The suspect then allegedly came outside with what police describe as a “long gun,” and further threatened the victim and the passengers in his vehicle.

Upon arriving at the scene officers requested the suspect come outside to speak with them but according to police the suspect refused, and barricaded himself inside, turning the incident into “a barricaded gunman” situation. A search warrant was then obtained for the residence, and the St. Joseph County Special Response Team was called into action. A negotiator was also brought in to get the suspect to surrender peacefully.

After nearly four hours, the suspect, a 54-year-old Three Rivers resident, came out and surrendered to police.

The suspect is currently lodged at the St. Joseph County Jail on charges of felonious assault, felony firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm and resisting and obstructing a police officer. The man will be arraigned in St. Joseph County District Court Wednesday, according to St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough.
