Bellevue man drowns in Leidy Lake

A 24-year-old male from Bellevue (Eaton County) drowned in Colon Township Saturday afternoon after walking into deep water in Leidy Lake, according to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responded to a call from the Leidy Lake Campground at approximately 3:51 p.m. Saturday, July 4. The victim, David Burns, Jr., did not know how to swim, and was “on foot, walking in Leidy Lake, when he unknowingly walked into deep water.”

Family members and other witnesses who were present at the time recovered Burns, who was not breathing, from the water. They “transported him by boat to the campground beach and began lifesaving measures.”

Medics from LifeCare Ambulance and personnel from Colon Community Fire and Rescue attempted to revive the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In addition to LifeCare, fire and rescue personnel, and sheriff’s deputies, the Colon Police Department and St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol provided onsite assistance.
