Speed, poor road conditions factors in two-vehicle crash in Sherman Township

A two-vehicle crash in Sherman Township Wednesday resulted in a two-hour road closure while first responders cleared the crash scene.

Deputies from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to M66 at Featherstone Road at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, and after an initial investigation into the crash, it was determined a 32-year-old Sturgis man driving a Dodge passenger car was traveling eastbound on Featherstone Road and was unable to stop at M66 due to snowy road conditions. The car slid into the intersection and struck a semi — driven by a 65-year-old Beaver, Pennsylvania man — traveling southbound on M66.

The truck jack-knifed following the collision and blocked the highway. A third vehicle swerved to avoid the initial crash and went into a ditch but the vehicle did not sustain any damage. No injuries were sustained as a result of this crash.

Speed and poor road conditions were factors in the crash, and there was no alcohol or drug use suspected. The 32-year-old Sturgis man was cited for driving too fast for road conditions.

Deputies were assisted by MDOT and Tri-Township Fire Department.
