Glen Oaks Community College will induct alumnus Bruce Berenyi into the Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the first Annual Viking Athletic Banquet to be held on Sunday, May 1 on the Glen Oaks Concourse.

Berenyi is from Bryan, Ohio, where he attended Fairview High School in Sherwood, Ohio. He attended Glen Oaks and played both baseball and basketball from 1973 to 1975 and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree.

In basketball, Berenyi averaged 21 points per game and was named First Team All-Western conference in his freshman year (1973-74); he averaged 28 points per game and was named First Team All-Region, First Team All-MCCAA, and First Team All-Western Conference during his second year (1974-75).

In baseball, during his freshman year, the team tied for first place in the Western Conference and during his sophomore year, he was named First Team All-Region, First Team All-MCCAA, and First Team All-Western Conference.

Berenyi was the first Glen Oaks baseball player to be drafted by a major league team. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the nineteenth round of the 1975 Major League Baseball Draft – but did not sign.

He played for Truman State University in Missouri (formerly known as Northeast Missouri State) in 1976 receiving accolades and was inducted into the TSU Hall of Fame in 1993. 

A hard-throwing right-hand pitcher, after a year at TSU, Berenyi was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round (third overall) of the June 1976 secondary draft. He played for the Reds 1980 through 1984 and was fourth in voting for the national League Rookie of the Year in 1981 after gaining a 9-6 record. 

Berenyi was traded to the New York Mets, where he pitched through 1986 – the year the Mets won the World Series Championship.

In addition, he was the nephew of baseball pitcher Ned Garver, an American professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball for the St. Louis Browns, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Athletics and the Los Angeles Angels.
