The Cass County Historical Commission is reminding attendees of this year’s Fall Festival to be mindful and respectful of the different cultures of the community. The festival takes place Saturday, October 13 at the Newton House in Decatur.
The commission says that the Fall Festival is an opportunity to showcase the history of Cass County, which began when Native Pokagon peoples, White settlers, and free and freedom-seeking Black communities came together. The commission believes that each of these communities has important stories and cultures that should be valued equally.
The commission says that attendees “dressing up” for the festival or participating in the “historical impressions” contest should remember the diverse history and be respectful in their choices.
“For example, to our Native community, the clothing worn at festivals or gatherings is imbued with complex and important spiritual, ancestral, and personal beliefs. Their clothing is not a costume; it is regalia,” the commission stated.
The commission’s goal is fostering appreciation for all members of the community, it also stated.
