Cass County Historic Courthouse reopening after major renovation

The Cass County Historic Courthouse, which was first under construction more than 125 years ago, is newly renovated and will once again house several officials and county partners.

An open house celebrating the anniversary of the structure and the completed renovations is scheduled for 3-6 p.m. Friday, October 11. The building at 120 N. Broadway St. in Cassopolis had been vacant since 2003, when judicial offices moved to the Law & Courts Building on M-62.

In October 2022, the Cass County Board of Commissioners approved the renovations. They were funded entirely through American Rescue Plan Act and a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant. The project was meant preserve the courthouse building’s historic architecture and create a functional environment for the 21st century.

“Now, the building will house offices of the County Administrator, Clerk/Register of Deeds, Treasurer, Geographic Information Systems, Information Technology, Parks and Recreation, Equalization, Veterans Affairs and the Board of Commissioners,” Cass County stated. “The courthouse annex where these offices were previously located will remain open and house multiple county partners, including Cass County CASA, Michigan State University Extension, Michigan Works! and the Department of Corrections.”

The October 11 open house will include a ribbon cutting ceremony and remarks on the courthouse steps at 4 p.m., along with light refreshments and tours for guests.
