Obituary: Beverly Zuidema

Beverly Jeanne (Van Drunen) Zuidema passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on May 31, 2020, after a brief hospitalization for a stroke. She was 85 years old.

During her working years, Beverly was a dedicated teacher and inspired many of her students to become teachers themselves. She worked hard for what she believed in, and she also modeled how to rest well, observing Sunday Sabbath and taking advantage of the academic schedule to refresh herself with summer days full of family and friends.

Though Beverly’s permanent residence was in Highland, Indiana with her sweetheart Duke, Three Rivers was a special place for her. She and Duke purchased their cottage on Pleasant Lake somewhat unexpectedly in 1974 after a leisurely drive. Duke and Beverly’s three children, their spouses, and 24 grandchildren and great-grandchildren have many wonderful memories of summer days on the lake: fishing, skiing, hunting for turtles and frogs, cruising to the swimming hole, jumping on the trampoline, hanging out with friends. Beverly was always telling Duke to slow down the pontoon so she could take it all in.

On weekends at the lake, Duke and Beverly attended Three Rivers Church of the Nazarene and Three Rivers Christian Reformed Church. Beverly was passionately devoted to Jesus in word and in deed, modeled in hospitality, generosity, joyfulness, and love. If she knew your name, you were in her prayers.
