Nancy Boyd: What’s next?

It’s a question we often ask ourselves. We feel a greater sense of control when we think we know what direction were heading in. But as we are coming to know, it is most often nearly impossible to predict what lies ahead.

Nearly all of us are learning of things we could have never predicted, unless we were the scientists whose voices have all too often not been “heard.” And so, we understand that whether or not we know what comes next, it does not always prepare us for how we will respond.

Several years ago, Al Gore was responsible for the statement “inconvenient truth.” Being creatures of habit, we are seeing how disturbing it can be to be out of control. Perhaps it is easier now to admit that control is something we rarely experience, though it certainly is not what we want to hear or believe.

This floating fellow pictured above brings to mind how much more success we might have if we are able to go with the flow. Granted, this is not our normal human response but it could well help us to examine our lives and where we are as well as where we may determine we are meant to be.

Perhaps a total return, whether physical or emotional, is not in our best interest. What we are learning within the context of not knowing, may well be a path worth pursuing even when it is not imposed upon us. We too can create a new normal for ourselves. Many are finding it life giving and rewarding to spend more time, if possible, with family as we are experiencing the stay at home directive.

Depending on the era in which you were born, you may remember times from your growing up years when family life was much more simplistic. And yet, we are also seeing evidence of those who are angry and lashing out at others who have chosen to wear masks, interestingly to protect them as well as others, or are ordering fast food and not moving quickly enough for the car behind them. Oh, how we attempt to gain control and lose the opportunity to embrace the times we did not ask for but must learn to live in for now.

May you find peace despite circumstances, and love beyond expectations in these times that are capable of teaching us so much more.
