Vehicle strikes 13-year-old in Fawn River Township

A 13-year-old was struck by a vehicle just before 7 a.m. Monday on Fawn River Road west of Big Hill Road in Fawn River Township.

A 13-year-old was struck by a vehicle just before 7 a.m. Monday on Fawn River Road west of Big Hill Road in Fawn River Township.

According to authorities, a 16-year-old Sturgis resident was traveling westbound on Fawn River Road when they struck the 13-year-old, who was in the roadway at the time of the crash. The 13-year-old was transported to Sturgis Hospital, and then airlifted to Bronson Hospital for treatment. The driver and passenger of the vehicle were uninjured.

Seatbelts were worn, and weather is believed to have been a factor in the incident, which remains under investigation.

Deputies from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department were assisted by the Sturgis Police, Michigan State Police, LifeCare Ambulance, Tri-Township Fire Department and Sturgis Towing.
