Volunteers are urgently sought for the Michigan Medicare Assistance Program (MMAP), the St. Joseph County Commission on Aging announced.

People who like helping others, solving problems, and getting to the bottom of a solution are encouraged to reach out.

“Please contact the COA at (269) 279-8083 ASAP and let us know your interest as soon as possible since Open Enrollment begins October 15,” the COA wrote on Facebook. “You can also visit the MMAP website at https://mmapinc.org/volunteer/ to learn more about how to become a volunteer.”

The COA explained what MMAP counselors do, including meeting with Medicare beneficiaries.

“One of the most rewarding and fun times of the year is Medicare Open Enrollment, where Medicare beneficiaries can change their drug plans. MMAP counselors meet with the beneficiary, review the plan options, and in many cases can help them save money by changing plans,” the COA wrote.

Additionally, counselors can help people who are new to Medicare understand how it works and what their next steps are.

“There is satisfaction in knowing you helped teach someone how to navigate a complex system,” the COA wrote.
