Kalamazoo City Commission interviews city manager finalists, decision expected Monday

Commissioners said they’ll consider both the interviews and public feedback before making their choice. Residents can submit feedback through the city’s online form or speak during the public comment period during the City Commission Committee of the Whole meeting at 5 p.m. ahead of Monday’s 7 p.m. meeting in order to provide feedback before decisions are made.

Candlelight vigil to honor victims of domestic violence set for October 21 in Sturgis

As of Monday night the City of Kalamazoo had received 56 applications for its city manager position. The commission agreed by consensus to condense that list to four finalists. 

Sturgis Area Community Foundation invests in United Way’s Capital Campaign

The foundation has awarded $200,000 in grant funding to the St. Joseph County United Way in support of its Capital Campaign to build a new facility in Centreville. United Way Executive Director Kelly Hostetler said funding for the new building will come solely from the capital campaign, separate from United Way’s annual fundraising efforts.

Low turnout, big impact: What voters will decide across Cass, Kalamazoo and St. Joseph counties

Despite the scope and impact of local offices and proposals, off-cycle elections typically draw limited participation. Cass County’s May and August contests, for instance, saw turnout of just 12 percent and 11 percent. Yet as Cass County Clerk Monica McMichael told Watershed Voice, these decisions matter. “I don’t think people realize how much power township boards and local entities have. They enforce zoning, they approve building permits, they can levy taxes. It has a huge effect on individuals,” she said.
