The meeting, which lasted more than three hours Tuesday, included several tense exchanges among commissioners, a closed-door discussion about City Manager Joe Bippus, and an emergency management briefing featuring city officials, first responders, and representatives from the American Red Cross and Samaritan's Purse.

Commissioner profile: Third District Commissioner Anthony Stanfill

Stanfill said the two biggest issues facing the City of Three Rivers are the water system and city-code enforcement. Stanfill committed to addressing water-related internal city processes and said he is hopeful for change, but didn't provide further details. “I believe there’s some positive light headed our way in regards to our water. You know, I’ll let that play out organically and refrain from any further comment on that at this time,” Stanfill said, adding that he doesn't want to speak for other commissioners or city staff.

Three Rivers City Commission reaffirms veterans housing ordinance despite objections

When the item last appeared before the commission in September, Commissioner Chris Abel raised concerns about language in the ordinance that restricted residents of veterans group homes from participating in recreational activities anywhere other than the backyard. The amendment returned Tuesday for its public hearing and possible adoption.

Three Rivers’ Third District commission seat could be vacant after this November’s election

Although the deadline to file for a spot on the ballot passed on April 25, City Clerk Leslie Wilson said individuals can still run as write-in candidates. To do so, a prospective candidate must complete an affidavit, have it notarized, and return it to the City of Three Rivers by the deadline. If the paperwork is filed, the write-in candidate needs only to secure more votes than any opponent to win. In an uncontested race, a candidate would need just one vote.

Three Rivers commissioners briefed on Constantine Street Lift Station main break

Three Rivers City Commissioners received an update Tuesday evening from the Three Rivers Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) regarding the July 7 force main break at the Constantine Street Lift Station. The break spilled approximately 500,000 gallons of untreated wastewater from the WWTP at the intersection of Constantine Street and Broadway Street near the St. Joseph River.

City of Three Rivers appoints Bobbi Schoon as finance director

The Three Rivers City Commission appointed Bobbi Schoon as the city’s new finance director/treasurer in a unanimous vote Tuesday evening. Currently serving as the Three Rivers Public Library (TRPL) Director, Schoon must now acquire additional municipal accounting skills for her new position, and has already met the prerequisites to be accepted into those training programs.
