In the face of rapidly rising COVID-19 case numbers, Glen Oaks Community College (GOCC) is stepping up its response by minimizing in-person interactions on its Centreville Campus. College President David Devier and other administrators provided an update during a regular meeting of the GOCC Board of Trustees Thursday morning, and Devier provided a further update on additional restrictions through a statement issued later on Thursday.
At least 160 public schools and 32 colleges and universities are reporting Monday new or ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks, according to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) data.
Normally, Glen Oaks Community College (GOCC) announces the recipients of its Special Recognition awards during its spring commencement ceremony. However, after the ongoing pandemic led to the cancellation of the 2020 ceremony, GOCC President Dr. David Devier said the college “made the decision to include the 2020 graduates as part of the May, 2021 commencement ceremony.” In the meantime, Devier said, “the college wishes to announce several individuals who are being recognized this year.” Devier’s announcement came in a press release issued by GOCC Tuesday. There is a total of five awards. Four of the awards each has one recipient, while one award has two recipients.
Larry Miller, a popular former Three Rivers art teacher who later became a school administrator, passed away at his home in Illinois earlier this month. He began teaching in Three Rivers in 1959. Miller was an educator for thirty years, and after retirement in 1989, he returned to Palestine, Illinois, his hometown. There, he opened a downtown art gallery and studio called Coon Hollow Studios in honor of the St. Joseph County throughfare where he once lived.
In a pair of press releases issued Monday, Glen Oaks Community College (GOCC) announced that applications are open for several scholarships. They include the 2020-21 Presidential and Dean Scholarships as well as scholarships from the Glen Oaks Community College Foundation. Specific eligibility requirements apply to some of the scholarships.
The Glen Oaks Community College (GOCC) Board of Trustees held a planning retreat and regular meeting Thursday morning at the college. President Dr. David Devier and other administrators and staff provided updates on pandemic cases and measures at the college, as well as on several student funding programs provided with assistance from the State of Michigan. Devier also said Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the college’s 2021 budget at flat funding.
Available for registration are four, 10-week-long accelerated online classes that begin October 5 and run through December 18. Students wishing to enroll in the courses should apply as soon as possible.
Students returning to classes at Glen Oaks this semester are likely to notice some visible changes to the campus after staff and contractors spent the summer working on completing improvements.
At a meeting of the college’s Board of Trustees on Thursday, Vice President of Student Services Tonya Howden said enrollment is down. At 958 students, enrollment is down 12 percent from the same time last year.
In a Thursday press release, Glen Oaks Community College announced that it will be participating in a free tuition program unveiled concurrently by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
