Voters choose new and returning leaders across St. Joseph County and Kalamazoo

In St. Joseph County, Angel Johnston defeated 13-term incumbent Tom Lowry for Three Rivers mayor. Johnston received 63.48% of the vote (784 total), while Lowry took 34.57% (427). Write-in candidate Nathan Walden received 0.49% (six votes).

While lead line replacement is underway in Three Rivers, most occur during major road reconstruction projects, which expose the pipes. The city is responsible for maintaining 47 linear miles of roadway and with only one or two projects completed each year, progress is gradual. Mayor Tom Lowry says meaningful progress will require state and federal funding, and until then, aging infrastructure will continue to pose risks.

Three Rivers’ Third District commission seat could be vacant after this November’s election

Although the deadline to file for a spot on the ballot passed on April 25, City Clerk Leslie Wilson said individuals can still run as write-in candidates. To do so, a prospective candidate must complete an affidavit, have it notarized, and return it to the City of Three Rivers by the deadline. If the paperwork is filed, the write-in candidate needs only to secure more votes than any opponent to win. In an uncontested race, a candidate would need just one vote.

The Third District Commissioner seat will appear on the ballot, but no candidates are running. The seat is currently held by Chris Abel, who is not seeking reelection.

The used 2023 Chevy Blazer will be utilized as an unmarked vehicle for the Three Rivers Police Department. The purchase will be covered, in part, by trading in three department vehicles with mechanical issues, along with a $14,760 city contribution.

Commissioners approved the use of $170,000 to purchase parcels adjacent to the airport. The airport will continue to have clear airspace, according to Director of Public Services Amy Roth's report.
