St. Joseph County will test weather sirens next week as part of statewide drill

Severe Weather Awareness Week begins March 17-23

Severe Weather Awareness kicks off next week, March 17-23. St. Joseph County will test weather sirens on Wednesday, March 20, at 1 p.m. as part of a statewide tornado drill.

Cities, villages, and townships in Michigan maintain their own weather sirens. Many municipalities, however, are not equipped with a weather siren, so it is important to remember that sirens may not be available in all areas.

Tornados

Tornados are a type of violent weather phenomenon that can cause widespread destruction and fatalities. These massive storms extend from thunderstorms to the ground, often reaching speeds of over 200 miles per hour.

It is important to take precautions when a tornado watch or warning is issued. People are advised to seek shelter in a safe room, such as a basement or storm cellar, located on the lowest level of their home. It is also important to stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls. People should also watch out for flying debris that can cause injury or death. If you are unable to remain in a safe location, it is best to go to a public shelter.
