Sturgis asks residents to properly dispose of grass clippings or face a fine

The City of Sturgis is reminding residents and contractors to refrain from blowing grass clippings into the street or into gutters, as it can cause flooding.

According to a statement posted by the city, heavy rain events can cause grass clippings to get washed off the roadway and into storm sewer catch basins, which can prevent water from draining properly and cause safety issues for motorists. The city says blowing clippings into the street or gutter is considered littering, and can result in a fine of $150.

Grass clippings are accepted at the city compost site for disposal. Compost Site hours are as follows:

April through October
Tuesday – Noon to 7:30 p.m.
Thursday – Noon to 7:30 p.m.
Saturday – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday – 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

November
Tuesday – Noon to 6 p.m.
Thursday – Noon to 6 p.m.
Saturday – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday – 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
