St. Joseph County Prosecutor Dave Marvin addressed the St. Joseph County Commission’s executive committee Wednesday concerning an exception to the county’s hiring freeze, a request Marvin has submitted more than once during his first two months in office in an effort to get his house in order.

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners Tuesday approved two exceptions to the county’s hiring freeze to fill two positions in the St. Joseph Prosecutor’s Office.
Following an Executive Committee meeting Wednesday morning, the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners held a workshop to start planning the 2021 fiscal year budget. For the last several years, the county has operated under a balanced budget, but only by making up shortfalls through drawdowns from the Delinquent Tax Fund (DTF). This year, possible revenue impacts from the ongoing pandemic and a slowed economy brought the imbalance to the front of many of the commission’s conversations about money.
In a 45th Circuit Court hearing Wednesday, Judge Paul Stutesman issued Mohammad Abuhaltam a prison sentence of 31 to 80 years with parole for the May 21 killing of James May, Sr. in Three Rivers.

Members of the St. Joseph County Commission’s Executive Committee discussed County Prosecutor John McDonough’s status and performance Wednesday morning. Following Wednesday’s meeting Commissioner Dennis Allen told WSV that McDonough said, “he was making progress in his health and returning health-wise. In consulting with his medical doctors, he feels comfortable that they will release him to come back to work before or just after September 1, and that’s his plan at this time.”
