Glen Oaks to offer $1,500 scholarships to students enrolled in cybersecurity programs

Microsoft program aims to fill jobs in cyber field

Students wanting to study cybersecurity now have the opportunity to apply for $1,500 scholarships at Glen Oaks Community College thanks to a new special partnership program between Microsoft Corporation and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

“Most significantly, the student scholarships will offset (and in some cases cover entirely) the cost associated with the classes,” Tammy Russell, executive director of institutional planning, assessment, and research, said. “The Cybersecurity certificate program can be completed in two semesters; while the associate degree program can be completed in two years,” said Russell.

Glen Oaks was one of 14 community colleges nationwide to receive the “Cyber Skills for All: Community Colleges Lead the Way Initiative.”

“Cybersecurity jobs are among the fastest-growing career areas nationally,” Kevin Conner, professor of information technology, said. “The average entry level Cybersecurity Analyst salary in Michigan is $72,664.”

As part of the grant eligibility criteria, preference is given to female and racial/ethnic minority applicants as the program seeks to increase the number of women and racial and ethnic minorities into the field of cybersecurity. Recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 each semester to continue receiving the scholarship.
