Ten million dollar Westnedge water main, road project starts Monday

Project was previously delayed in 2023 due to supply chain disruptions

A water main project is set to begin on Monday, March 4 on Westnedge Avenue in Kalamazoo. The project will involve replacing the water main and rebuilding the road in two main sections, starting between Whites Road and the one-way split at Park.

The project is expected to take place from March to October, during which time Westnedge Avenue will be open southbound only, with a detour for northbound drivers via Burdick Street.

The intersection of Whites and Westnedge will be closed nightly (8 p.m. to 6 a.m.) for about two weeks, with further delays possible due to supply chain disruptions. Construction work on Whites Road is also underway. As a result, Whites will be open to eastbound traffic only

The $10 million dollar project is funded by Kalamazoo’s Water ($6,400,000) and Major Streets ($3,705,856) funds, including $2,141,148 provided through the 2019 jurisdictional transfers agreement with MDOT, and a federal grant of $1,361,299.

Above ground improvements will include safety upgrades such as lane narrowing, improved sidewalks, and the upgrading of semi-permanent bike lanes. Plans also include traffic signal improvements at the intersections of Whites Road, Inkster Avenue, Crosstown Parkway, and Howard Street.

The Westnedge Ave Water Main and Reconstruction project is expected to be completed in 2024. The project was previously delayed in 2023 due to supply chain disruptions.
