Kalamazoo City Commission approves park improvements, rezones properties

The Kalamazoo City Commission approved a contract to rezone two commercial properties and make improvements to Southside Park during its meeting on Monday, March 4.

Meeting summary

The commission:

•Held multiple public hearings to receive comments on a number of proposed ordinances including one to rezone 1316 S. Park St. from a commercial office (CO) to live-work 1 (LW1). A second hearing focused on rezoning 107 Reed Ave. from commercial to residential.

•Approved a contract with Dale Hubbard Inc. for the disposal of hydroexcavator spoils at a cost of $168,500.

•Approved a contract with Earth Works Lawn and Landscape for frequency mowing services in the amount of $168,760.

•Approved the purchase of emergency warning equipment for front-line patrol vehicles from Arrowhead Upfitters for $183,244.06.

•Approved a sole-source contract with the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo for $200,000 for the administration and installation of murals and public artwork.

•Approved a license and development agreement between the city and Perfection Bakery Inc. (Aunt Millie’s) for improvements to Southside Park, and amend the capital improvement fund budget by $200,000.

•Aproved and accepted utility easements from Redwood Kalamazoo WQ Avenue MI P2, LLC for water main installed as part of the Redwood Texas Township project.

•Approved and accepted a public infrastructure right-of-way agreement with Oakwood Bible Church as part of the Oakland-Angling intersection construction project. (Postpone until March 18, 2024)

•Approved a contract with SWT Excavating for non-copper water service replacement in the amount of $1,593,663.89.
