Deer-related crash claims life in Cass County

A 67-year-old Elkhart man has died after a deer — initially struck by another driver traveling in the opposite direction — was propelled into his windshield, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

The two-vehicle crash occurred on Thursday, March 7 around 6:54 p.m. near the intersection of Cassopolis Road and Bullhand Street in Calvin Township.

Alyssa Handschu, 20, of Osceola, was traveling northbound on Cassopolis Road when she struck a deer that was in the roadway. The impact of the first crash propelled the deer through the windshield of a southbound vehicle driven by Daniel Haskett, of Elkhart, causing a second crash. Following impact, the 67-year-old’s vehicle left the roadway where it came to rest.

Haskett was pronounced dead at the scene as the result of injuries sustained in the crash. Alyssa Handschu was not injured.

Police say alcohol nor drugs appear to have been factors in the crash, and all involved wore seatbelts. The crash remains under investigation.
