City of Three Rivers to begin routine sewer cleaning, warns water may appear discolored

Sewer cleaning expected to finish by Friday, May 31

The City of Three Rivers will begin routine sewer cleaning on Wednesday. As a result, residents may notice an orange or rusty appearance in their water.

The city’s Department of Public Services says the water is safe to use and drink but it can cause stains to laundry if the discoloration is not first cleared from your home’s lines. The iron sediment in the water main being disturbed by the hydrant use reportedly causes the discoloration.

City staff suggests running cold water for a few minutes and flushing your toilet(s) to clear the lines. If running it for a few minutes does not clear your lines, let it settle for a couple of hours and try again.

Some residents may also experience an odor coming from their drains. To reduce the odor, add water to all floor drains. You can also keep toilet lids closed, especially ones on the lower level, and consider placing a towel between the lid and the seat.

The sewer cleaning project is expected to be completed on Friday, May 31. If you have any questions, you can call the Three Rivers Department of Public Services at 269-273-1845.
