A 23-year-old man was killed Saturday in Silver Creek Township when the tractor he was driving lost control and jack-knifed, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Nathan Scherer, of St. Joseph, was operating a tractor pulling a farm implement on Garrett Road north of Middle Crossing Road when he was thrown from its cab. The tractor then rolled onto him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office. The Indian Lake Fire Department and Pokagon Tribal Police assisted deputies at the scene.
